Unsafe abortion is a major contributor to maternal mortality. Today, unsafe abortions account for at least 13% of global maternal deaths. The problem is particularly acute in the developing world. Enabling women to take control of their reproductive health can be life-changing. Lack of access to safe abortion can be devastating.
Around the world an estimated five women die every hour as a result of unsafe abortion. Of the 21.6 million women who resort to unsafe abortion each year, 47,000 will die and around 8 million will suffer serious complications and permanent disability.
These are the reasons why we are committed to offering safe abortions in every country where we’re legally able to do so.
We work in countries all over the world to provide access to safe abortion (where legal) for women and girls who have decided to end a pregnancy. We’re also helping to shape abortion policy in several countries we operate in.
Alongside that, we provide post-abortion care, to make sure immediate life-saving medical care is available to women suffering complications from unsafe terminations.
Marie Stopes International advocates for safe abortion because we know it saves women’s lives.
