A recent story published by Buzzfeed News Australia described the current sentiment of the Australian public, who want foreign aid funding for Family Planning to continue.

Despite the recent submission from the Australian Christian Lobby to the foreign policy white paper public submission where they urge foreign aid towards all sexual and reproductive health services to end, a poll by Essential Research found that 67% of Australians would be “concerned” or “very concerned” if Australia stopped aid to groups that provide family planning and sexual and reproductive health services in Pacific Island countries.”

The reinstatement of a ban similar to President Trump’s Global Gag Rule in Australia would be extremely detrimental to the women of the Asia Pacific region.

Our Executive officer and Regional Director, Chris Turner told Buzzfeed News Australia that Trump’s policy would have the “exact opposite effect” to the one that is intended.

“By blocking funding to the world’s largest providers of modern contraception, it will reduce women’s ability to prevent unplanned pregnancy.”

Here are some actions you can take to ensure women in this region continue receiving family planning:

  1. Donate to Marie Stopes International Australia
  2. Tweet at Hon. Minister Julie Bishop and tell her you want family planning foreign aid to continue @JulieBishopMP

$15 can give a women or girl a year of contraception, giving her one more year to:

…be a girl
…complete her education
…pursue a career
…run her own business
…or spend time with her family

Donations over $2 are tax-deductable within Australia. Donations are in Australian dollars.
